Tribute to John Richard Wilkinson

It is with great sadness to announce the death of John Wilkinson. He was born in Horsforth, Yorkshire, in 1930. He studied pharmacy at the University of Bradford and qualified as a pharmacist on 18 September 1952. He went on to study chemistry, becoming a chartered chemist (CChem) and Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (MRSC), and did national service in the Royal Army Medical Corps where he was stationed in Scotland.

He worked in Ealing, west London, for many years, briefly in industry doing chemistry research and in Alberta, Canada for three years. In 1970 he bought Beken’s Chemist in Cowes, Isle of Wight, and relocated there with his wife and young family. He loved work and the local community, not retiring until 2005, aged 75.

Outside work, John was a keen cricketer, tennis and rugby player in his youth. He also actively enjoyed golf and sailing for many years. He remained a keen gardener all his life. He is survived by his widow, two children, a step child and three great grandchildren.

John died peacefully at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport on 11 January after a short illness. He was 85 years old.
