    On 31 January 2020, Martin Ibbitt. A former member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Mr Ibbitt registered with the Society in 1969 and, in 1975, was appointed as an inspector with the then Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain.

  • Tribute: Laurie Evans

    I was very sorry to read of the recent passing of Laurie Evans. I first met Laurie, together with his wife Celia, when I was aged 16 years, working the counter during evenings and weekends in a supermarket pharmacy in Southampton. Semi-retired after many years running their own pharmacy, a hub of the neighbouring community at Bitterne Triangle, Mr and Mrs Evans would frequently provide locum pharmacist cover for those evening shifts.

    I was sorry to learn of the passing of John Buckles. Although I have not had contact with John for some years, I have fond memories of our time together as apprentices with Timothy Whites and Taylors in Preston, in the early 1950s. John was the senior apprentice who acted as the ‘deputy apprentice master’. Even then, his abilities as a teacher came through. I well remember how he guided me, as a very raw recruit, through the complexities of the apothecaries’ system of weights and measures ...

  • Tribute: Alan Ross

    The recent death of Alan Ross deprives the profession of a pharmacist of exceptional qualities. Alan had a very distinguished career in hospital pharmacy and, following changes in the NHS, he made a major contribution to medicines management in nursing and care homes while advising three Family Health Services Authority general managers.

    On 6 January 2020, Dora Bladen, aged 83 years, of Brockenhurst, New Forest. A former member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Mrs Bladen graduated from from Nottingham University in 1959.

    At the meeting held on 18 November 2019, the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) Assembly agreed that several amendments to the Society’s Regulations would be made. Full details of the changes, which will take effect from 1 March 2020, can be found on the Society’s website.

    On 15 November 2019, John Bruce Gilmour MRPharmS, aged 87 years of Steyning, West Sussex. Mr Gilmour registered with the Society in 1956.

    On 15 November 2019, Ian Roderick Louis Stephens, aged 86, of Hove, East Sussex. A former member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society, Mr Stephens left the Society in 2003.

  • Tribute: John Buckles

    John studied for a BSc degree in pharmacy at the University of Manchester in the early 1950s. After graduation with a Division 1 degree, he registered as a pharmacist in 1955 and started carrying out research in pharmaceutical chemistry for an MSc degree at the same university. During this time, John also taught in the pharmacy department’s laboratories.
