Commonwealth Pharmacists’ Association release video guide on making hand sanitiser

The Commonwealth Pharmacists’ Association has produced a video to help pharmacists in low- and middle-income countries produce low-cost alcohol-based hand sanitiser.

Alcohol based hand sanitiser

A training video showing how to make World Health Organization-approved hand sanitiser has been published by the Commonwealth Pharmacists’ Association (CPA).

The video, which gives a step-by-step guide on how to prepare, label and store the alcohol-based formula, has been developed under the CPA’s Commonwealth Partnerships for Antimicrobial Stewardship programme.

Victoria Rutter, executive director of the CPA, said she hopes that the video will help “support the unwavering efforts of the many pharmacists and healthcare teams on the front line, tackling COVID-19 around the Commonwealth and beyond.”

Keith Ridge, chief pharmaceutical officer for England, said it was “great to see the CPA providing practical and straightforward advice on a cost-effective approach to hand sanitisation in low- and middle-income countries”.

Patricia Scotland, secretary general of the Commonwealth, said the “practical initiative” was a “shining example of Commonwealth co-operation that can deliver immediate benefit in the poorer and more marginalised communities of our 54 member countries”.

The CPA is a registered charity, which was originally established by the Royal Pharmaceutical Society in 1970 to promote the pharmacy profession throughout the Commonwealth.
