The Royal Pharmaceutical Society has endorsed a new set of inhaler standards developed by the UK Inhaler Group (UKIG) — a coalition of not-for-profit organisations and professional societies with a common interest in promoting the correct use of inhaled therapies.
The standards have been designed to be used as a framework to help support healthcare professionals initiating inhaler therapies and checking inhaler techniques so that they can demonstrate competency in prescribing inhaled medications and teaching the correct technique for use.
The aim is that the standards will help improve drug administration and improve outcomes for patients.
“Using an inhaler to the greatest benefit is a skill and so many patients receive sub-optimal treatment because of poor inhaler technique,” says Martin Astbury, president of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.
“The standards and competencies provided by the UKIG are a much-needed and important support for those initiating medication and teaching inhaler techniques, which should enable patients to have a better quality of life.”
The inhaler standards, which have also been endorsed by the UK Clinical Pharmacy Association and Asthma UK, will be reviewed in December 2018.
