Raj Aggarwal FRPharmS, a Cardiff-based community pharmacist and pharmacy owner, has been promoted to the title of honorary captain in the Royal Navy.

He formally received the title at a ceremony held in Birmingham on 28 February 2020, attended by Admiral Tony Radakin, professional head and chief of naval staff at the Royal Navy, and Brigadier Jock Fraser, regional commander for Wales and Western England at the Royal Navy.

Aggarwal, whose honour was conferred following approval by Queen Elizabeth II, studied pharmacy at Cardiff University between 1969 and 1972. He went on to register with the then Pharmaceutical Society in 1973 and received Royal Pharmaceutical Society Fellowship in 2013.

He has been an honorary officer in the Royal Navy since September 2018, when he was awarded the title of honorary lieutenant commander. In February 2019, he was further promoted to the position of honorary commander

Aggarwal said it was “a huge honour to be congratulated personally by [Radakin] today on my promotion”, adding that he hopes to use his position “to create greater diversity in the Navy, to show the community that the Navy are supportive and there are amazing careers on offer, with first rate skills training and opportunities to see the world”.

He is the first honorary officer of the Royal Navy in Wales.
