An updated draft of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) guidance, Safe and Secure Handling of Medicines: a team approach, is now open for public consultation.
The guidance sets out good practice in the transport and physical handling of medicines, and covers medicines manufacture, transport, receipt and storage, as well as the issuing of medicines, their use or administration, and their removal or disposal. Clinical aspects of medicines prescribing (for example, choice of medicine, treatment duration and means of administration) are outside the scope of the document.
The safe and secure handling of medicines guidance is particularly widely used in hospitals but applies across all care settings. It was originally published in 2005 and had not been reviewed since then. It has now been refreshed in accordance with the Society’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE)-accredited process for developing professional standards and guidance. Among other updates, the refreshed guidance incorporates relevant aspects of the Nursing and Midwifery Council’s Standards for Medicines Management.
The draft guidance document, which includes feedback options for each section, can be downloaded from the RPS website.
The consultation will remain open until 20 April 2018. After that date, a multidisciplinary task and finish group will review responses to the consultation and further update the guidance ahead of final publication at the end of 2018.
