The Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) in Wales has welcomed the news that the Welsh government will invest £100m to transform the nation’s health and social care services.
Details of the new Transformation Fund were announced by Vaughan Gething, Welsh cabinet secretary for health, social care and wellbeing, at the Welsh NHS Confederation’s annual conference on 7 February 2018.
Gething said that the money would be “heavily targeted at driving forward those changes to health and social care services that the Parliamentary Review [of Health and Social Care in Wales said were needed”.
The review, which was published in January 2018, made a series of recommendations on how to meet future challenges in health and social care.
“We recognise that radical and sustainable transformation of care can only be achieved through investment in new and innovative services, above and beyond the existing allocation of resources,” said Suzanne Scott-Thomas, chair of the RPS Welsh Pharmacy Board.
“We are determined that pharmacists must be part of transformative solutions in Wales, ensuring the expertise of the professions is fully embedded in the multiprofessional delivery of care.
“We will be making representations to the Welsh Government to outline where pharmacy innovation makes a difference across the care pathway from prevention of illness to acute care,” she added.
