Treating coughs and colds

2 December 2014: Royal Pharmaceutical Society director for Wales Jocelyn Parkes was featured in the Western Mail’s ‘Ask the Experts’ section, speaking about the season of coughs, colds, flu and viruses.

Parkes said: “If your cough and cold lingers, the temptation is to see your GP and ask for antibiotics, but in many cases antibiotics are not needed. Antibiotics are not effective against viruses, so they will not get rid of your cold or flu-like symptoms, which often clear up on their own within a week or so. Most of the time, our bodies are very good at fighting infection, so if you can, let your body do the work, not pills. Your pharmacist is on hand to discuss the best option for you depending on your symptoms.”
