Without clinical trials we would have no new drugs

18 January 2016: Following the news that one man has died and five others are being treated in hospital in France following a phase I drug trial, Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) chief scientist Professor Jayne Lawrence appeared on BBC News at Ten. Her comments were also picked up by 51 radio stations across the UK, as well as appearing online in over 60 international and 25 UK outlets, and in the Financial Times and Daily Express. Speaking to BBC News at Ten, Lawrence said: “Clinical trials are absolutely essential. Without doing clinical trials we would have no idea of the dose that a patient needed to take, we’d have no idea whether there are side effects, we just wouldn’t have new drugs.”
