Howard Rice receives the Distinguished Service Award from FIP president Carmen Pena

Howard Rice, a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS), has received the International Pharmaceutical Federation’s (FIP) Distinguished Service Award.

The award was presented to Rice on 10 September 2017 during the 2017 FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences in Seoul, South Korea.

Rice became a member of the RPS in 1965, after his graduation from the School of Pharmacy at the University of London. He began his career as a community pharmacist in 1966.

In 1972, Rice moved to Tel Aviv, Israel, where he continued to work in community pharmacy until 2011. Upon arrival in Tel Aviv, Rice joined the Pharmaceutical Association of Israel, and took an active part in the association’s running. He was elected to the association’s council in 1981, took up the treasurer’s role in 1985, and chaired the association between 1994 and 2001. In 2012, Rice became honorary president of the association. He was also a founding member of the Pharmaceutical Society of Israel.

Since 1994, Rice has represented Israel on the council of FIP. He served as the federation’s vice president between 1998 and 2006, and became an FIP fellow in 2007.

In 2003, Rice was appointed as Member of the Israel Parliament of Health, and between 2005 and 2011 he served as a member of the Ministry of Health’s Pharmaceutical Disciplinary Tribunal.

In 2016, he became an accredited consulting pharmacist.

“My feelings are naturally of both pride and humility,” Rice said upon receipt of the FIP Distinguished Service Award. “Pride to be acknowledged by your peers and humility since, as with anyone achieving such recognition, I am not sure that I deserve it.

“To accomplish tasks and projects is not a one man show and many people along the way have given me enormous help, many of whom are or were members or staff at the RPS, and others from all across the world.

“I love pharmacy. It has given me an interest, a livelihood and enormous satisfaction. The driving force within me has always been to work for pharmacy, pharmacists and all those patients whose trust is placed with us, to help reduce their morbidity and save their lives.”
