The UK Medicines Manufacturing Industry Partnership (MMIP) is proposing to use government funds to create four pharmaceutical manufacturing centres of excellence to help develop the country’s pharmaceutical industry through a specific focus on technology and innovation.
An MMIP report, ‘Manufacturing vision for UK Pharma,’ estimates the cost of the new centres at £140m, and argues they would both enhance the UK economy and improve the country’s healthcare service.
The paper mentions a number of “needs” and “manufacturing gaps” that the centres of excellence would be designed to fill, including development of packaging technology and smart devices for new medicine platforms and provision of innovation support for the manufacturing of advanced therapies.
