Applications are invited from members of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society (RPS) to represent the Society on the Maplethorpe Trust Committee.
Description of organisation
The committee awards postdoctoral Fellowships for one or two years for the promotion of pharmaceutical education and research at the University College London (UCL) School of Pharmacy and the Department of Pharmacy at King’s College London. Up to two appointments are made each year, and are usually tenable from October that year. Fellows are expected to hold a PhD degree and preferably be a pharmacist, but non-pharmacists working in a relevant field may also apply. The funds to support these Fellowships are from a legacy left by Cyril W. Maplethorpe which is administered by the University of London.
Description of role
The RPS representative serves alongside the head of the Department of Pharmacy, King’s College London; the head of the UCL School of Pharmacy; two scientific representatives, one each from the UCL School of Pharmacy and the King’s College London Department of Pharmacy. An independent chair is appointed by the University of London, currently Dr Candace Hassall, head of basic careers in the science division of the Wellcome Trust.
Time demands on RPS representative
- Members of the group attend two meetings a year in London.
- The autumn meeting is held for one to two hours in late October to early November and focuses on the policy and financial matters.
- The summer meeting to interview and appoint Fellows takes place in mid-May. This meeting is usually about 5 hours. Shortlisting of candidates prior to the interviews takes members up to 12 hours.
- In between meetings, members are asked to review first or final year reports from Fellows (August/September) to confirm that they are making satisfactory progress. This process is carried out by email.
- Members of the Maplethorpe Committee may also occasionally be invited to comment on other issues pertaining to the management of the fellowships between meetings by email.

- The date of the next meeting is Thursday 19 May 2016, 9.30am–2.30pm.
- The shortlisting process begins at the end of March, this is done by email. The committee secretary will send a shortlisting criteria/guidance and a matrix for panel members to complete for each candidate when applications are sent (usually in the region of 20–25 applications). The panel is usually allowed at least a fortnight to shortlist. Current members estimate that shortlisting can take up to twelve hours over that fortnight.
