Go to pharmacy first for minor short-term conditions

14 May 2018: Sandra Gidley, chair of the English Pharmacy Board, spoke to BBC Radio West Midlands radio about the impact of NHS England’s consultation on over-the-counter medicines that should not be routinely prescribed. “Pop along to your pharmacy first and see if you can buy something. The pharmacist will question you and [if necessary] refer you to the doctor,” said Gidley. “We do spend a lot of money in the NHS on self-limiting conditions. If people can afford to buy medicines, they should if it’s for a minor short-term condition. If the condition turns out to be something longer term, you can and should go to your GP.”
