Luigi G Martini takes up post as RPS chief scientist

Luigi G Martini FRPharmS has been confirmed as the Royal Pharmaceutical Society’s (RPS) new chief pharmaceutical scientist. He joins Claire Thompson, deputy chief scientist, and Colin Cable, assistant chief scientist.

Martini and his team will provide scientific expertise to the three national pharmacy boards, and to the Society’s Expert Advisory Boards. He will also contribute to the Society’s public engagement agenda.

Martini, known usually as Gino, first practised as a community pharmacist before completing a PhD in drug delivery from the University of Manchester. He then moved to a career in the pharmaceutical industry, and has gained experience at GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Roche Products Ltd and Shire Pharmaceuticals in a range of commercial, innovation and medical affairs roles. Martini is also a visiting professor in pharmaceutical innovation at King’s College London. 

Describing his appointment as a “privilege and an honour”, Martini said “I have always been proud to call myself a pharmacist and to call myself a member of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society.

This appointment is a clear signal that the RPS is determined to ensure that science into practice is a core tenet within the profession.”
